Heavy cannabis use in adolescents and young adults is associated with four times the risk of psychosis later in life, including schizophrenia and bipolar-like episodes. The perception that cannabis is not as harmful as alcohol and may have health benefits can lead to young people adopting and continuing use without being aware of the potential serious health consequences.
