The Confederacy consisted of states south of the Mason-Dixon line, Texas, and Tennessee, with an agricultural economy and about 9 million people plus 4 million slaves. It had strong international economic ties as exporters of cotton and tobacco. The northern Union was basically all the states north of Virginia, had a more industrialized economy, and was not an exporter of these crops.
