Comedian George Carlin was an early voice of warning about the environment and our cruelty towards it, and his comedy often came from the disappointment he felt at humans' potential for greatness amidst their present cruelty and harm. He may have had a dark sense of humor, but his underlying idealism and empathy always shone through.
