Alfred Nobel, originally a misanthrope who believed in mutual destruction, had a change of heart before his death and left behind a vast sum of money to establish a prize promoting arts, sciences, and peace. In 1898 he drew up his last will and testament and it was a few years before the first prize was awarded in 1901, due to his many residences in various countries.
