The FBI's COINTELPRO program emerged in the 1950s in response to the perceived threat of Soviet subversion in America and was initially aimed at Communist Party USA. The program continued for over 15 years, targeting a range of left-wing activists and groups with tactics that included surveillance, infiltration, blackmail, and even outright assassination.
