Recent research suggests that the appendix serves a purpose in the immune system, leading to calls for doctors to reduce the number of unnecessary appendix removal surgeries, known as negative appendectomies. The appendix stops functioning as individuals age and becomes vulnerable to inflammation, however, it does not pose a threat once inflammation has subsided.
