In 1994 and 1995, the Solar Temple cult committed a series of murders and suicides across Switzerland and southeastern France in the belief that they were being transported to a better place. Their final act was the simultaneous murder and suicide of 16 members, including three children, in a forest in France on December 22, 1995.
