Madeline Island has a rich history as a sacred spiritual center for the Lake Superior Chippewa and was largely inhabited by indigenous people, fur traders, and missionaries in the mid-1800s when William moved there to work for the American Fur Company. Although it is the largest island in the area, it is not part of the National Park.
