The origins of mariachi music can be traced back to Co-Cula, in Jalisco, where it was first written about in 1852 by a Catholic priest who denounced the drunken festivals and music. The French occupation of Mexico between 1862 and 1866 created a myth about the word mariachi being a local butchering of the French word marriage.
