Benton MacKaye came up with the idea of creating a trail that goes from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian range, and not only that, but to also build shelters, community camps and socialize the woods for people to get away from the rest of the world. However, while the idea was widely accepted, some of the socialist aspects were trimmed off.
