The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed in 1801 through the passing of separate acts of union by both Irish and British parliaments. However, in 1922, the Irish Free State was partitioned off and eventually became the Republic of Ireland, leading to the name change of the UK to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1927.
