The Hunt for Extraterrestrial Life
The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in carbonate deposits on Mars could suggest the presence of past microbial life, according to astrobiologists. PAHs are found in carcinogenic compounds created when grilling meat and are typically found in oil and coal deposits, but their presence in the carbonate deposits found on Mars may indicate that they were deposited by decaying microorganisms.
