Before Edison, there was a man named Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville who invented a device that could capture sound waves mechanically, but couldn't play them back. He used an acoustic trumpet and a glass plate covered in lamp black to etch sound waves onto the plate, which is the earliest sound recording we have today.
