In 1926, two sisters who performed in a circus were taken away from their mother and home state of Virginia by the manager of the circus act who allegedly convinced them to go with him under false pretenses. The sisters were later found to have been forcibly sterilized under a law that aimed to cleanse the gene pool of undesirable traits.
