The last pure Pinta subspecies of giant tortoise named George died in 2012, but hybrid Pinta tortoises found on other neighboring islands gave hope of their restoration in Pinta Island. The invasive goats introduced to the island were decimating the vegetation, which took many years to eradicate ultimately leading to the loss of the Pinta subspecies.
