Studies have shown that emotional empathy may not scale upward as the number of people affected by a tragedy increases, it actually goes the other way where humans tend to be less empathetic towards a larger crowd. This is where Paul Bloom argues that emotional empathy is narrow and people tend to relate more with those similar to them.
