In the early 1900s, the Magdalene laundries in Ireland evolved from providing rehabilitation to fallen women to taking in women with special needs, psychiatric patients, and victims of sexual assault. While run by Catholic orders, the laundries were also supported by the Irish government who paid the church for laundry fees.
