Researchers have discovered a potential mechanism in the GABA system that explains why foods such as tart cherries, kiwi fruit, and melatonin can aid in sleep. By manipulating the GABA receptor, part of the kiwi fruit benefit on sleep in animal studies was mediated by the brain's natural inhibitory neurotransmitter system called the GABA system.
