People send letters and packages to the Hawaiian volcano goddess, Madame Pele or Queen Pele, believing that they are cursed and their bad luck will continue until they return rocks they have taken from Hawaii. However, the curse is believed to have originated in the 1940s when tour guides and rangers became tired of people stealing from parks and carrying things into tour buses.
