The word "bagel" has a few proposed origins, including the Yiddish word "bagen" meaning to bend, the German word "bugel" meaning bracelet or ring, and an Austrian term for stirrup also spelled "bugel". The word "bagel" was first seen in print in 1610 in a Krakow, Poland handbook, where it was listed as an official item to gift a woman on the occasion of her son's circumcision.
