The current generation of American students has lived their entire lives after the 2000 US presidential election and 9/11. As a result, they take partisan and contentious elections for granted, and it's essential to look back into the past to understand the different ways of organizing US politics and reassure students that the country has been through contentious elections before, and people have fought to defend their right to vote.
