The Nemesis theory proposes the existence of a red or brown dwarf star orbiting the sun beyond the Oort cloud. This theory suggests that this star, with its gravitational pull, could fling asteroids towards the sun and cause mass extinction events on Earth, although it has since been ruled out by NASA's WISE survey in 2014.
