In 1958, airlines discovered that jet travel was too expensive for most people and as a result had to invent economy class, initially called austerity class. Samuel S. A. S., a Scandinavian airline company, was one of the first to serve food on flights, including open-faced Scandinavian-style sandwiches with ox tongue and asparagus.
