The Taliban rose to power in Afghanistan in the late 1990s as a response to the corrupt and violent rule of warlords, who were themselves a result of the country's long history of war and foreign interference. While the Taliban initially enjoyed support from many Afghans, their decision to allow al Qaeda to use Afghanistan as a base for terrorist attacks ultimately led to their downfall.
