Joseph Priestley was able to create the pneumatic trough through his extensive access to CO2, which allowed him to isolate eight different gases for the first time. Despite Stephen Hales creating the first pneumatic trough, Priestley's device was able to isolate gases through the collection and isolation of the gases using a glass bell jar inverted over a vat of water.
