The biggest practical application of quantum computing is the simulation of quantum mechanics to learn about chemical reactions to create new materials, new drugs, better solar cells and more, and although quantum computers being able to decode long-held secrets was a worry, most people assume that intelligence agencies are already scooping up data in hopes that they will be able to eventually decode it once the technology is available.
