Mangrove forests can reduce storm surges and wave heights, providing an important protective barrier for coastal communities. The study shows that a decrease of up to 66% in wave height can occur for every hundred meters of mangrove forests, and surge depths can be reduced by over one and a half feet for every half a mile.
