The Relationship Between Consciousness and Predicting Behavior in Social Settings
Plato hypothesized that consciousness arose as a way to better predict the behavior of others in social settings by knowing how oneself feels makes them better able to know how others may be feeling. While there isn't a definitive answer, Stephen Pinker agrees with this claim.
