There has been a recent resurgence of interest in consciousness in academic philosophy, following a period where people pretended it did not exist. This has largely been due to rediscovered work from the 1920s by philosopher Bertrand Russell, who challenged the logical positivist belief that anything not answerable by experiment is meaningless gibberish.
