As environmental protections began to be pushed back against in the 1980s, activists began burning down buildings of institutions they believed were complicit in harming the environment. A group called the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) was formed by individuals concerned about deforestation and climate change, who believed that the planet faced ecological catastrophe.
