The demand for instant wealth through gold and silver acquisition eventually became less feasible and colonial leaders shifted their focus to cash crops such as sugar, produced by slave labor from Africa. The need for a continuous labor source resulted in the consumption of African slaves to cultivate these new crops in large quantities, ultimately leading to the death and hardship of many African slaves.
