Republicans focused on investigating the Clinton re-election campaign's potential acceptance of money from China, while Democrats focused on whether or not the Koch brothers and other wealthy individuals violated campaign finance law in supporting the Republican party in more than two dozen federal elections. The investigations became overloaded with whataboutism and failed to address the underlying issues.
