The USS Arizona's magazines contained hundreds of 14-inch shells, thousands of rounds of machine gun and small arms ammunition, and nearly 5,000 cans of powder. When these ignited, survivors reported less of a big boom but more a mighty whoosh, with the ship seemingly jumping 15 to 20 feet upwards before breaking in two.
