Lysenkoism was a Soviet political campaign that caused the persecution of many geneticists, including Vavilov who had been the lead geneticist in the Soviet Union. Lysenko denounced Mendelian genetics as a capitalist and clerical conspiracy, causing many geneticists to be used as fall guys for the holiday.
