Alfred Packer, a prospector, told a tale of self-defense against a companion who tried to kill him, but when he returned from the mountains, five men were missing and he was carrying animal hides instead of a rifle. He was accused of murdering his companions and eventually confessed to killing the men in self-defense, after running out of food and resorting to cannibalism.
