The Story of the Minerva "Country"
In 1971, a millionaire named Michael Oliver attempted to establish a micronation called the Republic of Minerva on a man-made platform in the Pacific Ocean. After the Tongan government, claiming sovereignty over the area, invaded the platform, Oliver began selling "Minerva dollars" as souvenirs, marketed as "the world's most unusual new country inspiration for the most unique metal coin ever minted."
