Despite numerous life-altering tragedies that occurred around Maurice Herzog, he refused to accept responsibility for them, which led to his eventual ostracism from the mountaineering community. His son was a late addition to the family and died in the 2000s as a part of the British military, involved in an attempted government overthrow.
