The perturbative approach to string theory has not provided a comprehensive solution to the mapping of a consistent physical world in 10 dimensions to one in four dimensions. The hope has always been that there will be a deeper and better understanding of what string theory is that would actually go beyond this perturbative expansion and which would generalize this.
