The Women's Health Initiative, started in 1991, aimed at studying health outcomes for postmenopausal women. The initiative found that hormone therapy carried an increased risk of cardiac events, strokes, clots and breast cancer, however, the number of women taking hormones continued to rise over the next two decades.
