In the 1800s, poor addicts were sent to insane asylums, prisons, or foul wards, where they received cruel and inhumane treatment. The first celebrity rehab facility, Charles B. Towns Hospital, opened in 1901, and treated alcoholics with Belladonna, a poisonous plant.
