Scientists are able to modify and investigate the function of various genes in RNA viruses by making a DNA copy of the virus, altering it, and putting it back into cells to see the effects on the virus reproduction. This technique has been applied to influenza, as well as other RNA viruses and coronaviruses, for research purposes.
