In the 1940s, United Fruit utilized the Guatemalan army to force debt slavery on farmworkers. The company virtually owned Guatemala, with control over plantations, railroad tracks, ports, and the telephone system. The CIA provided $100 million to arm anti-communist paramilitary groups.
