Scientists have been able to use viruses as tools to deliver proteins in vaccines even before mRNA vaccines came along. Vector vaccines such as the adenovirus vector COVID-19 vaccines use a virus that will infect humans but not cause disease, genetically modified with a specific gene to deliver the necessary proteins to trigger immune response.
