The Vikings used a method called "fixing their winter quarters" where they would quickly fortify a camp to become their new home, and then move their crowd into this fortified camp, a form of armed family migration. This was the case in Northumbria, East Anglia, Mercia, and Wessex in the ninth century, and the Anglo Saxon Chronicle would repeatedly mention this method.
