The History of Magdalene Asylums
Magdalene Asylums were founded in the mid-1700s as part of a church campaign to provide rehabilitation for women who were considered "fallen" for having sex outside of marriage, but often the conditions inside were prison-like. The redemption process often included coercive measures such as shaven heads, institutional uniforms, restricted diets, and solitary confinement.
