In the mid-1700s, the church started a campaign to put "fallen" women, who were willing to have sex outside of marriage and get pregnant outside of wedlock, to work. Although most of these women weren't convicted of a crime, they were subjected to prison-like conditions, including coercive measures like institutional uniforms, restricted visiting, and solitary confinement.
