The Science Behind the Default Mode Network and Salience Network
The default mode network is the network associated with imagination and is engaged when an individual closes their eyes and starts paying attention to their thinking rather than outside sensory experiences. Summary
The default mode network is engaged when your brain focuses on imagination and thoughts that stem from your own experiences and memories whereas the salience network involves the insula and other areas that map the body surface and combine internal and external information. By closing your eyes, you engage more of your brain machinery dedicated to interoception and thinking about your thinking.
