The default mode network is engaged when your brain focuses on imagination and thoughts that stem from your own experiences and memories whereas the salience network involves the insula and other areas that map the body surface and combine internal and external information. By closing your eyes, you engage more of your brain machinery dedicated to interoception and thinking about your thinking.
