The traditional models for understanding behavioral responses to cues are insufficient because they do not take into account both motivation and reinforcement. A new model proposes that four stages – experiencing a cue, interpreting it based on current state, predicting outcomes, and determining whether the prediction exceeds a threshold – better explain how people respond to cues.
