Early Examples of the Use of Public Executions as a Tool of State Power and Sovereignty
The Assyrians were one of the earliest peoples to carve their message of enforcing state power by showing what they did to people who broke their biggest laws, while Chinese civilization also used public executions to enforce state power and sovereignty. A story is told that Cambyses II, early king of Persia, forced Egyptian nobles to watch 2000 of their children killed in public.
